The Government of Kenya has yet gain extended the migration to the second generation e-Passport.
The Ministry of Interior & Coordination of National Government has announced that they have extended the deadline for voiding the current old generation passport which is dark blue in colour. The deadline has been extended by a year and this means you can still use it until March 1st 2021.
The govenment says the decision to do this is due to the fact that 1.8 million Kenyans (mostly in the diaspora) are yet to replace their old passport with the new East African Community biometric e-Passport.
They went on to encourage people to take advantage of the extra time to acquire the new passport during this 1 year grace period. Locally, you can get such passports at Nairobi, Nakuru, Kisii, Eldoret and Embu. In the diaspora, you can get at Berlin, Paris, London, Washington DC, Johannesburg and Dubai.
This announcement comes after a time the Government extended the deadline for the new passports from September 2019 to March 1st 2020. The extension will allow people ample time to get the new passports as the government scrambles to phase out the old dark blue passports.
This also comes at a time when the government declared that they will begin processing passports within one day from July 2020. This followed the revamp of the system since last year, the deadline caused massive lines that forced the government to introduce a booking system for people to obtain e-passports. Well, this new move will give you ample time to obtain that precious passport during this year in preparation of the eventual phasing out of the old passport.
