We have seen movie characters use phones for so many years. From the days of payphones to the age of smartphones, protagonists and antagonists alike use them. Movies are a great way to showcase your tech since since they are viewed by millions of people around the world.
Apparently Apple has a policy on how their tech products are portrayed on the silver screen.
In an interview with Vanity Fair that was published on YouTube, Knives out director, Rian Johnson shared an interesting tidbit about how iPhone product placement works in film.
“Apple, they let you use iPhones in movies but –and this is very pivotal, if you’re ever watching a mystery movie – bad guys cannot have iPhones on camera.,” he said.
I’d be honest, I have never noticed this while watching a movie but if you think about it, it makes sense.
Apple, like every other company, would love its products being displayed in the best way possible. There are some impressionable people out there who would liken the use of an iPhone by a villain to be a bad thing and it seems Apple wants to prevent such a use case. It sounds really petty for Apple to do this, but it is the most Apple thing ever. People have pointed out before that the ‘good guys’ always use Macs so Apple knows what they are doing.
iPhones are still the biggest moneymaker for the American company. iPhones still generate over 50% of their sales so they would not want that number to dip any time soon.
