The M-PESA app has quietly received a new update dubbed v3.2 that has brought a few new features. This includes the ability to buy international airtime and two-factor authentication.
The big one is the fact that users will now be able to purchase airtime for international lines. You can now buy airtime for users from over 70 countries directly from the app. The feature is readily available as an option on the Buy Airtime feature on the M-PESA app.
As reported by Android Kenya, Safaricom made sure to announce it on social media as the feature has been in high demand from Kenyans who wish to connect easily to their family and friends based in the diaspora.
In addition to that, the new update also focuses on users’ security enhancement via two-factor authentication (2FA). This is a new layer of protection designed to have users verify their identity with a code sent to their numbers via call or SMS. This is meant to protect the account from any unauthorised access. This comes at a time when priority on user security has been in high demand on a mobile-money platform that experiences frequent isolated incidents from con artists.
The new update is also expected to have brought in a few bug fixes for the app as well to improve on general user experience.
These new features have already started rolling out on iOS countrywide as Android users should expect a slower rollout as some don’t have the update yet. In case you don’t have auto-update enabled, you might have to check on your app store for the update to install it.
