how to replace lost kcse certificate by KNEC

As outlined in Section 10 of KNEC Act No. 29 of 2012, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) is mandated to Set and maintain examinations standards, administering national exams at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels and undertake research on educational assessment.

Another of KNEC’s core mandates is to award certificates or diplomas to candidates of its examinations. In addition, it confirms authenticity of certificates or diplomas issued by the Council upon request by the government, public institutions, learning institutions, employers and other interested parties. The council is responsible for KCPE and KCSE examinations for example.

KNEC offers online services through its Query Management Information System (QMIS). This platform allows users to submit and track queries related to examination results, such as lost certificates, result confirmation, and foreign qualification equivalency.

To be clear for those who have lost or damaged original certificates, the examination council has stated “KNEC does not replace lost certificates. Instead, we issue a CERTIFICATION LETTER to those who may have lost their certificates. The certification letter is legally acceptable and can be used in the place of the lost certificate. “

Here’s how to apply for KNEC Certification Letter (Lost Certificate)

  1. Register an account at QMIS
  2. Log in with the credentials sent to your email
  3. Select Lost Certificate option from the menu
  4. Fill in the Index number, type of exam and year then click FIND
  5. Attach the following documents:
    1. Copy of the lost certificate/Result slip (MANDATORY)
    1. Both sides of your ID
    1. Passport size photo
    1. Police abstract
    1. Confirmation from the registrar of person: available at NSSF Building 7th floor, Upper hill, Nairobi
  6. Submit the application
  7. Wait for verification of the application
  8. You will receive an SMS notification to log in and make payment
  9. Pay KES 5,220 and wait for your application to be processed
  10. Keep checking on the system to know the status of application.
  11. Once the process is complete, you will receive an SMS notification to collect your certification letter from the KNEC offices.

Due to the online platform, people do not need in-person visits to KNEC offices, except for collecting physical documents once their query has been resolved.
