Home internet service providers (ISPs) in Kenya typically offer plans with speeds ranging from 2 Mbps to 1 Gbps.
Driven by the demand for high internet speeds, most ISPs have updated their Internet packages, as highlighted in our ISP feature, resulting in all of the top ten providers offering plans starting at 5 Mbps or higher.
This shift by ISPs is backed by sector statistics from the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA). A new trend emerged in the final quarter of 2024: 39.7% of fixed internet customers, a majority, selected data speeds between 10 Mbps and 30 Mbps.
Between June and December 2024, the number of fixed data and broadband subscribers choosing speeds between 10 Mbps and 30 Mbps increased by approximately 49.80%, rising from 455,530 to 682,389.
This represented a significant change from previous years when the majority of subscribers preferred speeds between 2 Mbps and 10 Mbps.
This immense demand for high internet speeds is exemplified by the 1,071.19% growth in subscribers using 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps, with numbers jumping from 15,226 to 178,326 in the latter half of 2024.
In this period, the subscribers between 30 Mbps and 100 Mbps actually declined, suggesting that most of them moved to the higher band.
Among the top 10 Fiber to Home ISPs, only Poa Internet, Dimensions Data, and Vijiji Home have internet packages below 10 Mbps.
Demonstrating the market’s shift, Safaricom, the leading provider, discontinued its 10 Mbps package in 2024, now offering 15 Mbps as its minimum.
In general, fixed internet subscriptions experienced growth in Kenya. Subscribers were 1,500,940 in June, and the industry closed the year with 1,718,679.
However, generally subscriptions are low as this means that only 3.33% of Kenyans have fixed internet. Safaricom remains the major player with 621,149 subscribers, representing 36.1% market share.
