Snapchat has officially launched a dedicated app for Apple Watch, giving users the power to view and respond to chats directly from their wrists.
Designed for quick, on-the-go communication, the app brings essential messaging features to Apple’s wearable, enhancing how users stay in touch.
This is a significant move in how users can interact with the platform, giving them a convenient way to stay connected without ever pulling out their iPhone.
With the new Snapchat Apple Watch app, users can now view and reply to chats using a variety of input methods:
- The built-in Apple Watch keyboard
- Scribble for handwriting text
- Dictation for voice-to-text replies
- A wide range of emojis and Bitmoji reactions
This lightweight version of Snapchat doesn’t support sending Snaps, viewing Stories, or using the camera.
Interestingly, Snapchat’s move comes at a time when many major apps have abandoned Apple Watch support.
Apps like Slack, Facebook Messenger, Uber, and Lyft previously launched Watch-compatible versions, only to later withdraw them due to low engagement and high maintenance costs.
Snapchat is confident that its highly engaged user base, especially younger audiences who value convenience and rapid communication, will embrace this new feature.
“We want Snapchat to be accessible on all the devices our community uses, including wearables,” the company shared.
While the Apple Watch app doesn’t include Snaps, Stories, or video chat, it delivers the essentials for messaging, fast access, emoji support, and real-time notifications.
Snapchat is making a bold bet that wearables can once again become a meaningful messaging platform.
If this experiment proves successful, it may encourage other developers to revisit the Apple Watch ecosystem as a viable platform for more than just fitness tracking and notifications.
