The Somalia government has been instituting a lot of changes to stabilize matters in the horn of Africa. This has been extended to the identification of citizens as well, where the country will soon be receiving electronic passports and national ID cards.
The government has entered into a partnership with HID Global which is expected to manufacture passports fitted with chips for citizen identification. Design for the cards has been implemented by Al Madina Group, the company is also offering supporting solutions for the new identification system.
Law enforcement agencies will be able to verify citizens using the new ID’s, according to HID Global, the e-passport is compliant with International Civil Aviation Organization standards and should therefore protect Somali citizens who travel across international borders.
