Today was a momentous day for the United Kingdom. The country and the whole world waited for the results of their referendum which stated: “Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?” The results were surprising. Out of the over 33 million votes cast in the referendum, 17.4 million people representing 51.9% of the votes cast voted to leave the EU.

And here's the #Brexit map. Extraordinary. pic.twitter.com/brFojlBRt9

— 📣Margo Kingston💧🔥 (@margokingston1) June 24, 2016

This led to a reaction on Twitter as the results were streaming live from the authorities. They included tweets from the residents that showed disdain towards the situation to tweets from economists showing the stock market reaction and some decided to tweet memes!

Someone pointed out the irony of Britain pulling out of the EU

However, the majority of people made fun of the situation the UK decided not to be a part of the EU

The first contender was borrowed from the Straight Outta Compton logo which has been made into a meme countless times and has now been tailored for the UK’s case.

If only Steve Harvey was the chief returning officer.

The Crying Jordan meme is always appropriate for this kind of situation.

Gordon Ramsay’s “Idiot Sandwich” is always a classic.

Others commented about the depreciation of the Pound Sterling.

A meme “summed up” UK’s position after leaving the EU.

Just saw this on 9gag – definitely sums it up… #EURefResults pic.twitter.com/39qAAkQb5F

Others took the opportunity to sell merchandise.

Another running gag on Twitter Only 90s kids will remember was used to describe the EU.

— Johnny Robinson (@Johnnyyrobinson) June 24, 2016

Others satirically ridiculed those people who voted no in the referendum using a Spongebob Squarepants scene.
