Safaricom Transitions Customers to New Emerald PostPay Plans

Emerald PostPay

Safaricom CEO Dr.Peter Ndegwa

Safaricom is streamlining its mobile subscription offerings with the launch of Emerald PostPay. A new plan aimed at providing better value and more flexibility for individual users.

The service, which began on February 28 of this year, offers new plans with a mix of minutes, data, and SMS starting from KES 1,000 to KES 10,000.

What’s new? Safaricom is automatically migrating existing customers in batches to the new Emerald PostPay plans.

Customers receive notifications informing them of the shift and can still choose a different bundle via *544#.

What is Emerald PostPay?

Emerald Postpay is a revamped service combining affordability and generous resource allocations for everyday mobile use. It replaces the previous PostPay offerings and introduces a tiered system of bundles designed to suit varying needs.

Emerald PostPay Bundles

Monthly Price (KES)MinutesDataSMS
1,00040012GB1,000
2,0001,00025GB2,000
3,0001,50039GB3,000
5,0002,50067GB5,000
10,0007500140GB10,000

Say Goodbye to Resource Rollover

One notable change is that unused resources no longer roll over. All minutes, data, and SMS will now expire after 30 days, even if you don’t use them all. For users joining mid-month, a prorated fee applies, but your bundle still expires at month’s end.

The service is available to:

  • All PrePay customers looking to upgrade to a more structured, postpaid-like experience.
  • Existing PostPay users who will be migrated to new Emerald plans after choosing a bundle.

How to Join Emerald PostPay

Joining is easy. Just:

  1. Dial *544# on your Safaricom line.
  2. Select “Emerald” from the menu.
  3. Choose your preferred plan.
  4. Enter your email address.
  5. Accept the terms and conditions.
  6. Pay using M-PESA or Bonga Points.

Confirmation of successful enrollment is sent via SMS. For current PostPay customers, opting into Emerald will automatically unsubscribe you from your existing plan.

Payment & Billing

You can pay via

  • M-PESA (PayBill 200200)
  • Bonga Points (via PayBill 200200)

Bills are due by the 5th of every month. If payment isn’t received:

  • You’ll get reminders on the 2nd to the 6th.
  • A disconnection notice is issued on the 7th.
  • After 90 days of non-payment, your plan is terminated, and your line reverts to PrePay.
  • If unpaid by 120 days, your account may be listed with the Credit Reference Bureau (CRB).

Reconnection is quick, within 20 minutes after clearing your bill via M-PESA.

To access Emerald PostPay, a deposit matching your chosen plan is required. This acts as security and can be used to cover any unpaid bills or losses in case of default.

Prepayments are credited to your account and used in the following order:

  1. Settle outstanding bills.
  2. Enable out-of-bundle usage (voice, SMS, data).
  3. Offset future bills.
  4. Purchase other Safaricom services.

Additional Perks

  • Earn Bonga Points with every Emerald PostPay transaction.
  • Enjoy international calling to select destinations like the US, India, China, and Canada using your allocated minutes.
  • For roaming services, activation is done via *200# and may require an additional deposit.
  • Your monthly bill is sent via SMS and email.

Safaricom maintains high standards of data protection in line with the Data Protection Act. Your personal data is collected only for legal and service-related purposes and handled securely. Parents or guardians can also register a line for minors under their own account.

How to Leave the Service

To terminate your Emerald PostPay plan, email [email protected] with your request.

With the introduction of Emerald PostPay, Safaricom is giving customers more value, more resources, easier plan management, and a better overall experience.
