Lite apps has become a new trend among social networking companies. These are stripped down versions of the official apps that offer some of the core features whilst using less data and use very little system resources.
Twitter has noticed the benefits of having Lite apps where they first launched Twitter Lite, which was a Chrome app version of mobile web. This was not your typical app that you download from the Play Store since it just embedded itself to your homescreen from Twitter mobile.
Well, Twitter is testing an Android app for Twitter lite in the Philippines as reported by TechCrunch. Twitter confirmed to the publication by sending this statement.
“The test of the Twitter Lite app in the Google Play Store in the Philippines is another opportunity to increase the availability of Twitter in this market,” a spokesperson from the company told the publication. “The Philippines market has slow mobile networks and expensive data plans, while mobile devices with limited storage are still very popular there. Twitter Lite helps to overcome these barriers to usage for Twitter in the Philippines.”
Since it is available only in the Philippines market, you cannot find it on the Play Store if you’re not in the market. However, thanks to APK Mirror, I was able to get a working apk of Twitter Lite for Android and it works rather well.
The app has the usual features that you see on the main app like segmented tabs for the timeline, search, notifications and direct messages. Since this is an app that is targeted at a consumer on a tight budget, there is a ‘data saver’ mode which allows you to load images at will.
If you’re not in the Philippines, don’t worry, you can download Twitter Lite for Android on APK Mirror.
