Tecno Takes on Huawei with the Camon 11 Pro

Tecno Camon 11 Pro

Tecno Camon 11 ProWe expected this. With all the hype surrounding the Huawei Y9 (2019), Tecno would not take it sitting down. As from today, smartphone buyers in Kenya will continue benefiting from manufacturers tag of war as each of them wrestles to entice customers to buy their products.

Tecno has unveiled the Camon 11 and Camon 11 Pro, successors to the Camon X and Camon X Pro that were launched earlier this year. If things are getting a bit hazy and confusing, here’s how to recognize the Camon 11, it is the company’s first notched device – No, we don’t know if the software allows you to hide it yet.

AI Camera

Top on the list of Camon 11’s outstanding features is an AI-powered camera. Over the years, the focus has been on the selfie prowess of the Camon series and this remains true. The Camon 11 Pro brags of a 24MP selfie camera, that if the company’s sample images are anything to go by, look really good.

Tecno also mentioned that the new Camon 11 Pro has improved facial recognition for better portrait shots as well as an AI-backed beauty mode that takes into account gender and age.

On the back, there’s a dual camera setup, 16MP lens and a 5MP depth sensor. Part of the AI on the camera’s software is automatic scene detection that includes a built-in document scanner, portrait mode and a variety of night mode options. The company also put special emphasis on HDR, with improvements on the same.

6GB RAM

Tecno has also made great strides to improve the performance on the Camon 11 Pro. The company has included 6GB RAM and a more powerful Helio P22 processor to make the Camon 11 Pro a productivity powerhouse. There’s also a dedicated gaming mode that ensures uninterrupted gaming experience.

Everybody Gets a Notch!

Aside from the cameras, the Camon 11 Pro also features a new design for the company, not necessarily a new design for the smartphone industry. It is hard to ignore the inspiration Tecno got from the Huawei Y9 (2019) – the design is so similar, right down to the branding, but that could be a good thing. There’s a notch, just in case this passed you earlier and remember that diamond fire design from the Phantom 8? Yes, we have it here as well clad in a gradient colour of blue and black – on the Pro variant. The standard Camon 11 has more colour options including; Bordeaux Red, Aqua Blue and Midnight Black.

AR emoji

One more new addition is AR emoji. Does this ring a bell? Well, that’s the exact name Samsung gave their 3D emojis, imitating Apple’s Animoji and Tecno did the honourable copy-paste and now we have it here. Changes have also been made at the software level with a new version of HiOS (4.1) running on top of Android 8.1 Oreo. The highlight here is that you can now uninstall system apps if you choose so.

The Camon 11 Pro has an asking price of Kes.23,999 with the lower spec’d Camon 11, that sheds off some RAM, storage, camera pixels and processing power asking for Kes.14,999. The Camon 11 is already on sale at Telkom outlets and Tecno partner shops, the Camon 11 Pro is still on pre-order until 25th November and then hit stores thereafter.
