2020 has been a crazy year and a way to know that is through a social network like Twitter. This has been a roller-coaster of a year and Twitter has released their #ThisHappened recap to show what was shared the most on their platform.
Starting with my favourite statistic of all, which involves cooking. Twitter says tweets about cooking tripled this year which is actually not a surprise at all. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, we saw a banana bread craze which Twitter says surged for only three months and now is back to normal levels. Twitter says that from the food related emojis shared on the platform, everyone “developed a serious sweet tooth.”
Keeping with the same theme, they released the most retweeted tweets of all time. Here is the list.
Twitter also revealed a number of interesting trends they noticed in 2020. They also made infographs of the most discussed sports team worldwide which was dominated by football teams, especially in Europe but the top spot was taken by the NBA team, Lakers.
The most discussed people on Twitter in 2020 is not a surprise at all. US President, Donald Trump took the top slot followed by his successor Joe Biden. George Floyd was third thanks to the widespread campaign online and offline about his death. Kobe Bryant and Barack Obama completed the top 5.
Finally, Twitter talked about the most tweeted emojis on Twitter and this is not a surprise.
