Facebook’s parent company rebranded to Meta, which means that the likes of Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Facebook itself are under the Meta umbrella.
The development was key because according to CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the company chose ‘Meta’ because ‘it can mean ‘beyond’. The defining quality of the metaverse will be a feeling of presence – like you are right there with another person or in another place.’
Facebook is a popular social media platform by sheer numbers; it has about 2.89 billion monthly active users (as of the second quarter of 2021). It has since reported about 1.93 billion daily active users, which also accounts for 66 percent of monthly active users.
No other social media platform comes close to that.
However, the company has not had it all rosy. It has been faulted for its laxity in terms of addressing hate speech and fake news cases. Specifically, the company reportedly relies too much on AI to fix hate speech and fake news issues, which has proven to be less than effective.
Facebook has also been faulted for giving advertisers, especially political advertise excessive access to user data. The development can be traced to the Cambridge Analytica case where political ads were used to manipulate polls.
All that aside, Meta has revealed some interesting numbers for Kenya, and they are quite interesting.
