Joe Rogan is threatening to quit his Spotify-exclusive podcast deal with the streaming giant for his Joe Rogan Experience.
Both Joe Rogan and Spotify have come under heavy criticism regarding how they handled misinformation, especially around COVID-19 shared on the Joe Rogan Experience(JRE) podcast.
Spotify picked Joe Rogan over protests led by a couple of musicians who had offered ultimatums. This choice wasn’t surprising as Joe Rogan brings Spotify a minimum ad spend of $1 million and advertisers who buy ads on the JRE podcast have to buy ads on Spotify’s catalogue too.
The JRE podcast has controversial takes and the criticism including open letters from 270 global health professionals even pushed Spotify to now add COVID-19 content advisories to podcast episodes that discuss COVID-19.
Joe Rogan confessed in his Tuesday episode to MMA fighter Josh Barnett that if ” JRE became something different and if it gets to a point that I can’t do it anymore- where I have to do it in some sort of weird way where I walk on eggshells and mind my p’s and q’s- fuck that!”
He doesn’t mention where he’d host his future podcast episodes if he ever quits Spotify. Some podcast clips are still available on YouTube to direct users to Spotify to listen to the full episodes.
Spotify acquired the Joe Rogan Experience podcast in 2020 for reportedly more than $200 million.
