Airtel Kenya became the third telco in Kenya to offer eSIM yesterday. In an event attended by Airtel Africa’s CEO Segun Ogunsanya, the telco announced the availability of the service, which Safaricom and Faiba have been offering for a while now.

eSIM has become commonplace across other parts of the world such as the West, and devices such as the iPhone 14 series sold in the US do not have a slot for a physical SIM. eSIM also helps customers to switch to networks quite fast, and without the need to remove the SIM card module, but that can be a challenge in Kenya because the exercise cannot be completed by a customer in the comfort of his or her home since they have to visit a customer care shop for the same. We hope this changes in the future.

To see if your smartphone can use Airtel Kenya eSIM, start by dialing *#06# on your device and look for an EID number to appear.

If it shows up, then your device is compatible.

Next, head over to an Airtel store and speak with one of the telco’s customer service representatives, who can guide you through the eSIM setup process using a QR code.
