Data from the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) shows LinkedIn is the least-used major social media platform in Kenya. LinkedIn, which is owned by US tech giant Microsoft was used by only 0.7% in the three months to December 2023.
LinkedIn differs from other social media platforms in its focus on professional networking. This professional tone, reflected in its interface, can make it seem less engaging than platforms designed for casual interaction.
As a result, LinkedIn may have a lower overall usage rate compared to others. Its monthly active user base tends to be low across the globe.
According to data from LinkedIn itself, the country with the highest number of LinkedIn users is the USA. It has approximately 200 million users. India comes second, with 101 million users.
The messaging platform Telegram which has about 900 million users globally is used by only 2% of Kenyans. On the top end of the graph is where Telegram’s rival WhatsApp can be found.
Facebook and WhatsApp, both owned by Meta, were the most used social media apps in the last quarter of 2023. In the referenced period, Facebook slightly edged WhatsApp to become the most used social media application in Kenya. 47.5 per cent of Kenyans used Facebook during the quarter, while 47.3 per cent used WhatsApp.
YouTube, owned by Google, was third with 21.0 %. TikTok at 17% and Instagram at 11.3% closed out the top five. With the news that Kenyans will soon be able to monetize their content on Facebook and Instagram, the dominance of Meta platforms looks set to continue.
X which has undergone significant changes under Elon Musk including the ability to earn from the platform was used by just 7.9% of Kenyans. A 0.2% growth compared to the previous quarter.
