The world’s biggest search engine, Google, has a new Head of Search, Elizabeth Reid. Previously, Liz Reid was the head of Core Search Experiences. In another significant change, Pandu Nayak is leaving his role as Lead of Search Quality and Ranking. However, he is not leaving the company but moving to the role of Chief Scientist of Search.
“We’re pleased to share that we’re unifying the Search org under Liz Reid – a longtime and well-respected leader at Google with deep product and technical knowledge. We have great momentum in Search, with recent improvements in search quality, new ways to search like Circle to Search, and features using gen AI to help with even more complex questions. For example, SGE, still only a Search Labs feature, has already been used for billions of queries. We’re excited to bring our Search teams together under her leadership.”, was the statement Google shared with the press.
Having joined Google in 2003, Liz Reid has 2 decades of experience working in search. She has served as Lead of Core Search Experience for 3 years now. In her new role, she will report to Prabhakar Raghavan.
She is credited as one of the earliest pioneers of Google Maps and Local Search and helped Google redefine modern-day mapmaking with AI. Reid was also the first female engineer in the company’s New York office.
“Today, I’m taking on a new role leading Search, and I am humbled by the opportunity to shape the future of this important product.” Reid wrote on her LinkedIn.
In another change, Cathy Edwards is moving to the Long-term Bets team in Knowledge and Information. Cheenu Venkatachary has also been promoted to lead the Google Search Quality and Ranking teams. Venkatachary takes over from Pandu Nayak.
Significance of Changes to Google Search Team
While the Search giant has not given any concrete reasons for the changes, speculations abound. Liz Reid was part of the team that worked on the new Google Multisearch. Secondly, she helped reimagine how people navigate and understand information with generative AI including Search Generative Experience.
Google recently introduced two features for search on their Android devices: Circle to Search and Multisearch. As the company pushes for the growth of AI as part of its search engine, it’s no surprise someone who has been working on the same is promoted.
Regarding changes in the Search and Quality teams, recent research conducted by German researchers found that search results are increasingly overrun by low-quality SEO spam. This is a problem Google has been grappling with.
The company has been releasing core updates to try to address the matter. Possibly, the change in leadership is to help enhance these efforts. In fact, Google is currently rolling out core updates and spam updates for its search engine.
