The government of Kenya is joining forces with Italy intending to boost transformation in the country’s tech industry. This new partnership was penned in a bid to benefit from Italy’s expertise in space and emerging technology to improve public service delivery.
Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, Dr Margaret Ndung’u led the delegation with Italian officials led by Adolfo Urso, Minister of Enterprises Made in Italy, in Nairobi.
The meeting covered how the two countries will engage in developing space technology as well as innovative methods for rolling out fibre-optic cables across the country, promoting information exchange and manufacturing chips.
Artificial intelligence was also a topic of discussion between the parties with Italy providing expertise on the development and execution of the technology to improve public service delivery.
“There is also the area of artificial intelligence (AI), which we are ready to move forward, considering we want to link AI to socio-economic development,” Dr Ndung’u said after the meeting.
The Kenyan government plans to lay up to 100,000 kilometres of fibre and establish digital hubs in all 1,450 wards in the country under this partnership.
