Artificial intelligence company OpenAI seems to be breaking new financial ground as the company announced that it has raised $6.6 billion in venture capital investments. This new round of investment is part of a broader plan by the ChatGPT maker to shift from its nonprofit beginnings.
The funding round was led by venture capital firm Thrive Capital backed by tech giants like Microsoft and Nvidia as reported by Associated Press.
The round has been described as one of the biggest venture rounds in the tech world and has been ranked as one of the highest in the past 20 years. It is clear to see why such huge firms chose to take a chance at a company that has for some time now led the world of AI with ChatGPT currently being the model to beat in the global industry.
Microsoft has clearly been hugely invested into OpenAI as it had already pumped an investment worth $10billion last year for a large stake of the firm in exchange.
These moves have come at a time when OpenAI has been looking to convert to a fully profitable company and veer away from being a nonprofit research organization.
It will be interesting to see how this new funding round brings in new partnerships between the AI firm and its investors like Nvidia that is a leading designer of chips needed to build and run AI systems.
