YouTube has recently addressed concerns regarding a viral rumor about a homepage layout that allegedly hides video view counts and upload dates. This after a screenshot of the YouTube homepage displaying videos without upload dates or view counts has been circulating on social media this week.
In 2021, the Google-owned platform eliminated the dislike button to reduce targeted harassment of creators, a move that sparked backlash from users around the globe. Despite this, a browser extension quickly emerged, allowing users to restore the dislike count.
On Monday, October 28, VidIQ shared a post on X indicating that YouTube is testing a new homepage layout. The new homepage layout omits view counts and upload dates.
The accompanying screenshot displayed six videos featuring only the thumbnail, title, and channel name, without any additional information. Typically, viewers would see the view count and an estimate of how long ago the video was uploaded.
YouTube Clarification
- YouTube quickly responded to the rumors, stating that this particular layout is not part of any official testing. They explained that such changes might occur if viewers have certain browser extensions enabled. Which in turn can alter the display of the website. This situation highlights ongoing concerns about transparency and trust on social media platforms. As platforms evolve, users and creators are increasingly vigilant about changes that could affect content discovery and engagement.
Not everyone in the comments on the post is opposed to the removal of upload dates and view counts. Many users suggested that this change could actually benefit some creators, as viewers often skip videos with lower view counts.
This news comes just days after reports surfaced that YouTube is testing a new, more affordable version of YouTube Premium. The version will feature limited ads.
YouTube clarified that this layout is not under official testing and may result from browser extensions. Users can rest assured that important video metrics will continue to be accessible as YouTube focuses on enhancing the user experience while maintaining transparency.
