Safaricom and Opportunity International have introduced FarmerAI, an AI-powered chatbot designed to provide smallholder farmers in Kenya with real-time agricultural insights. This initiative aims to enhance productivity and sustainability among underserved farming communities.
FarmerAI uses advanced AI to provide Kenyan farmers with timely information on critical agricultural topics, including weather patterns, fertilizer application, pest management, and market prices.
Accessible via SMS and WhatsApp, the chatbot ensures that farmers, even in remote areas with limited internet access, can receive timely and actionable advice.
The pilot program for FarmerAI is already underway, with a target of enrolling up to 1,000 farmers in key agricultural regions across Kenya by the end of 2025. The pilot runs in sync with Kenya’s potato crop cycle, providing farmers with timely advice for growing this important crop.
During this phase, FarmerAI will operate under a co-branded model featuring DigiFarm and Opportunity International branding, showcasing the partnership’s collaborative efforts.
Dr. Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom, released a statement expressing the company’s commitment to making a difference in Kenya’s agricultural sector.
“AI is a critical part of the present and the future. Our mission at Safaricom is to become Africa’s leading purpose-led technology company by 2030. In line with this, we are committed to bringing technological solutions to our customers and stakeholders that will positively impact them. FarmerAI is the first solution we are bringing to farmers that enables them to interact with AI and feel the power of that technology.”
A Positive Shift for Kenyan Farmers
Opportunity International designs digital interventions, including FarmerAI, using a human-centered approach that incorporates direct feedback from farmers into development and implementation.
During the pilot phase, the team will engage farmers both digitally and in person to tailor the tool to their needs and real-world challenges. This engagement process will provide valuable insights that will inform the ongoing design and development of FarmerAI, ensuring that it continues to deliver real-world value.
Safaricom and Opportunity International see FarmerAI as just the beginning of a smarter, more connected agricultural sector. By providing smallholder farmers with instant, accurate, and localized information, the chatbot is paving the way for a more resilient and sustainable future.
This initiative also emphasizes digital inclusion, bridging the gap between rural communities and vital resources. By equipping farmers with the right tools, FarmerAI boosts productivity, strengthens food security, and supports Kenya’s economic growth.
