Google has quietly ventured into the film and television industry with the launch of “100 Zeros,” a multiyear collaboration with Range Media Partners.
This initiative aims to fund and produce a mix of scripted and unscripted content, leveraging entertainment to enhance Google’s cultural relevance and promote its technologies, such as AI and Immersive View.
Unlike previous efforts like YouTube Originals, “100 Zeros” plans to distribute its content through traditional studios and streaming platforms such as Netflix, rather than relying on YouTube.
This strategic shift allows Google to reach broader audiences and integrate its products more subtly into mainstream media.
The initiative has already supported indie projects like Neon’s horror film Cuckoo and launched the “AI On Screen” program to commission short films about artificial intelligence.
These projects not only showcase storytelling but also serve as platforms to promote Google’s emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and spatial computing.
“100 Zeros” is led by dedicated Hollywood professionals from Range Media and overseen at Google by Jonathan Zepp. This move aligns Google with other major brands investing in entertainment, most notably Apple, which has found success with Apple TV+ through acclaimed original series and films.
However, while Apple fully owns its distribution channel and content, Google’s approach is more flexible, choosing to partner with external studios and streamers rather than build its own platform.
This allows Google to embed its brand and technologies into the entertainment ecosystem without taking on the cost and complexity of running a dedicated service.
By embedding its products into entertainment content, Google aims to reshape public perception and connect with younger audiences, particularly Generation Z.
