In a move to offer more flexible and affordable subscription options, YouTube is piloting a new Premium Duo plan. This plan is designed for two users to share the benefits of YouTube Premium at a cost-effective rate.
The pilot program is currently underway in select countries, including India, France, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
“We’re experimenting with new ways to provide greater flexibility and value to our YouTube Premium subscribers, including offering a two-person Premium plan option, allowing two people to share a subscription at a reduced cost,” a YouTube spokesperson said.
What is YouTube Premium Duo?
The ‘Premium Duo’ plan allows two individuals to enjoy all the features of YouTube Premium, such as
- Ad-free viewing
- Background play
- Offline downloads
- Access to YouTube Music Premium
In India, the pricing structure is as follows:
- Individual Plan: ₹149 per month
- Duo Plan: ₹219 per month
- Family Plan: ₹299 per month
This positions the Duo plan as a middle-ground option between individual and family subscriptions.
Eligibility Criteria
To subscribe to the Premium Duo plan, both users must:
- Be at least 13 years old.
- Have active Google accounts.
- Be part of the same Google family group.
This setup ensures that both users can maintain separate accounts while sharing the subscription benefits.
As of now, there’s no confirmed timeline for global availability. YouTube is likely observing user behavior and feedback in the test markets before deciding on a broader rollout. If successful, the Duo plan could expand to more regions, including Africa, the U.S., and Latin America.
This move brings YouTube closer in line with other streaming services like Spotify, which already has a similar “Duo” plan. It’s also a smart way for YouTube to convert more users to paid subscriptions without forcing them into pricier family plans.
In 2024, YouTube Premium crossed 100 million subscribers, and offerings like this could push that number even higher.
