We have known for a while now that Samsung, as one of the sponsors of the upcoming Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was going to release a special edition of its flagship smartphone for the games. We even got an early look at the device a few days ago.
The Galaxy S7 Edge Olympic Edition is finally official under a month to the start of the Olympics.
The device was fittingly unveiled in Rio and packs just about everything the standard Galaxy S7 Edge has. The add-ons include the Olympic theme that is central to the device like the 5 Olympic blue rings emblazoned on the back of the device and the coloured accents around the home button and the back camera. According to Samsung, “The colors of the Olympic Rings will also be prominent in the phone’s user interface in the home and lock screens as well as the message, dial and contact screens and notification bar.” Olympic-themed wallpapers will be available too.
Alongside the device, Samsung also officially announced its Rio 2016 app.
The company is expected to provide 12,500 Galaxy S7 Edge Olympic Games Limited Edition devices and its latest wearable, the Gear IconX earbuds to all athletes participating in the games. For the rest of us who are not Olympians, 2,016 units of the Galaxy S7 Edge Olympic Edition will be up for grabs in select markets.
The device’s pricing is not yet known but you can already guess that it will be way beyond the reach of many to justify its “Limited Edition” status. The recent Batman Galaxy S7 Edge is a good example.
