Snapchat offers a variety of fun features for its users to use, but one of the favourites is Lenses. Lenses are special augmented reality objects where in this case, they are masks that align with your face to give off a certain effect.
That feature has proven to be popular and Snapchat has been constantly updating the feature weekly by adding new masks. However, there is still room for improvement in the area of AR and Snapchat is doing exactly that with the introduction of a new way of using Lenses.
Currently, when you use Lenses, you can apply them while using the front facing camera or the rear primary camera. This was limited to people’s faces but not inanimate objects we have around us and now that has changed.
Now when you are Snapping with your rear facing camera, you only need to tap the screen to find lenses that will add augmented reality objects in your vicinity. Augmented reality is a technology that has been used sparingly over time and Snap is aiming to take this to a whole new level.
Thanks to this new feature, expect people to add augmented reality objects to their surroundings while taking a Snap, which will make your Stories more interesting to your friends and family.
As a sidenote, this looks like an implementation of what Sony has been doing with the AR effect on the camera app where you add various AR objects like dinosaurs or an aquarium. AR is definitely the future of making apps like Snapchat become more interesting to its users and you can bet this will become popular once people start getting it.
