Last night was the premiere of House of the Dragon. This is the long-awaited and much teased HBO’s Game of Thrones spinoff series that returns us to Westeros since 2019 when the original season aired. House of the Dragon is a prequel set to the events of Thrones and takes place 200 years and detail the Targaryen civil war—called the Dance of the Dragons.
To catch up, you’ll need to watch at least all the 73 episodes of Thrones. Anyway, House of Dragon is all about the Targaryen family back when they ruled Westeros at the height of their power. The series is based on George Martin’s Fire & Blood and Ryan Condal, the show’s co-creator has said that its a faithful adaptation of the book.
The underlying storyline is that King Viserys wants his daughter, Princess Rhaenyra, to take the Throne and rule after him. But some people including Daemon Targaryen(the king’s brother), and Otto Hightower(the King’s Hand and Alicent’s father) have other plans for the Throne which then builds the conflict albeit slowly with tension growing for years and years.
King Viserys Targaryen inherits a peaceful and prosperous realm from Jaehaerys and his reign became the apex of Targaryen’s power and wealth.
House of the Dragon revolves around three important families: the Targaryens – King Viserys, his daughter Rhaenyra, and brother Daemon. The Hightowers, with Otto and his daughter Alicent Hightower. And the Velaryons, with Corlys, his wife Rhaenys and their kids Laena and Laenor.
Other relevant characters include Criston Cole who is a talented fighter but a steward’s son, Mysaria, a former prostitute who is the lover and trusted confident of Prince Daemon, Lyonel Strong, Lord of Harrenhal and serves on King Viserys’ council as the master of laws.
Unlike Game of Thrones, we get to see this many living and fighting dragons in Westeros – 17 in total and nine in this season. Also, House of the Dragon will be much better than Game of Thrones as it’s based on a complete book and George is fully involved. Also, the show starts with morally ambiguous characters who have both good and evil in them as George RR Martin pointed out at this year’s Comic-con.
House of Dragon also has a cool soundtrack composed by Ramin Djawadi – The Prince That Was Promised.
Anyway, here are the best and funniest reactions from last night’s premier episode – The Heirs of the Dragon.
