In a surprising turn of events, it appears the Sony PlayStation 5 console which was released two years ago has been jailbroken.

What is Jailbreaking?

To “jailbreak” in the tech world means that certain software or hardware which had restrictions to modification is now able to be modified to perform additional functions or install different applications that are not allowed to be installed on the hardware console by the manufacturer.

Video evidence of the jailbreak was posted on Twitter by a modder known as Lance McDonald who displayed it. The video which has gained traction with the current viewer count being 2.4 million views shows Lance installing a horror game demo P.T on the Playstation 5 which was previously restricted by Konami who removed the game from the Playstation Store.

Even though the jailbreak was successful it is not possible for users to execute any actions as Lance noted. It is also worth noting that the jailbreak available for PS5 is only compatible with PS5 4.03 versions. The jailbreak was executed through the WebKit + kernel exploit. It is also believed that with physical access to the PS5, firmware 4.50 or 4.51 might be able to be jailbroken with BD exploit.

Pros of Jailbreaking

Jailbreaking the PlayStation 5 will give you access to these features:

  • The ability to modify various Games
  • Additional themes for the PS5 user interface.
  • Download different games for free
  • The ability to void your PS5 warranty.

Cons of Jailbreaking

Jailbreaking also comes with different risks such as getting a ban from the Playstation Network (PSN), You will not be able to access the multiplayer in online mode, and lastly, will ultimately void your PS5 warranty.

It is yet to be seen if the jailbreaks will be used to install games or will be manipulated by hackers to increase piracy. Sony has yet to say anything about this development or if it will take any action against those who instigated this jailbreak.

Jailbroken Playstation 5 looks to be more expensive than the actual price of the console which is not available or hard to get in different places around the world.
