Amazon is advancing its integration of artificial intelligence into the shopping experience through testing a new feature called “Buy for Me.”
You’ve probably searched for an item on Amazon and not found in their store. Now, instead of abandoning your search or manually browsing other retailers, Amazon’s AI shopping agent will do the legwork for you, finding the item on external sites, presenting options, and even handling the checkout process on your behalf.
The feature is currently available to a limited number of iOS and Android users in the U.S.
How ‘Buy for Me’ Works
The “Buy for Me” feature is designed to make shopping even more seamless. Here’s how it operates:
- Searching for a Product: If Amazon doesn’t have what you need, the app will show results from other retailers.
- Selecting an Item: Users can browse third-party listings without leaving Amazon’s ecosystem.
- AI-Powered Checkout: If a user chooses a product, Amazon’s AI agent visits the retailer’s website, adds the item to the cart, and fills in payment and shipping details, all without requiring the user to navigate away.
- Transaction Completion: Amazon facilitates the purchase, but customer support and returns are handled by the third-party seller.
This system is powered by Amazon’s Nova AI model and integrates with Anthropic’s Claude AI, ensuring secure and efficient automation.
With this move, Amazon is looking to expand its dominance beyond its own marketplace. Even when it doesn’t stock an item, the company can still be involved in the transaction, capturing more e-commerce revenue and keeping users engaged within its ecosystem.
AI Push by Amazon
‘Buy For Me’ is only one of the many AI shopping features that Amazon is working on. Some of the others include:
- AI Shopping Guides (October 2024): Helps users find products based on detailed preferences and recommendations.
- Nova Act AI (2024): A browser-based AI assistant designed to handle shopping and other web-based tasks.
By integrating AI deeper into the shopping process, Amazon is working toward an era where online shopping feels effortless.
For now, “Buy for Me” is in a limited testing phase, but if successful, it could roll out to a wider audience. If Amazon refines this technology, we could see a future where AI personal shoppers become a standard part of the online retail experience.
