Elon Musk’s AI venture, xAI, has taken a major step toward closing the gap with industry leaders OpenAI and Google by adding a memory feature to its Grok 3 chatbot.
The update lets Grok remember user preferences and context across conversations, making its responses more intelligent and personalized over time.
This long-awaited upgrade brings Grok closer in functionality to ChatGPT and Gemini, which already use persistent memory to customize replies based on past interactions.
What Grok’s New Memory Feature Does
Grok’s memory allows it to retain information about your interactions, like your name, favorite topics, or preferred tone, and apply that knowledge in future chats. For instance, if you often ask about space news or tech topics, Grok can start offering those proactively.
According to a post from the official Grok account on X (formerly Twitter), “Memories are transparent,” indicating that users can view and manage the information Grok retains.
Users have the option to disable the memory feature via the Data Controls page in settings and can delete individual memories directly from the chat interface.
In contrast to the sometimes opaque behavior of other AI platforms, xAI is making a deliberate push for transparency.
Users have full control over memory settings, can view and manage stored data, and delete any information they don’t want Grok to remember. This aligns with a growing demand for more ethical and user-driven AI tools.
Where and How to Use It
The memory feature is now available in beta through Grok.com and the Grok apps for iOS and Android. However, it’s currently limited to users outside the European Union and UK due to regulatory constraints.
xAI says it plans to roll out the feature to Grok on X (formerly Twitter) in the near future.
The upgrade is part of a broader push behind Grok 3, xAI’s most powerful model to date.
Released in February 2025, Grok 3 reportedly delivers over 10x the compute of Grok 2. Musk claims it performs better than OpenAI’s GPT-4, Anthropic’s Claude, Google Gemini, and others in benchmarks covering math, science, reasoning, and code generation.
Currently, Grok 3 is exclusive to X Premium+ subscribers, though xAI is expected to expand access later this year.
