At its 2025 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple introduced iOS 26, bringing one of the most significant updates to its mobile operating system in over a decade.
The release comes with a sweeping redesign under a new aesthetic called Liquid Glass, deeper integration of generative AI, and usability enhancements across apps and system functions.
Liquid Glass: A Visual Shift
The most noticeable change in iOS 26 is its visual overhaul. Liquid Glass introduces translucent and reflective UI elements designed to mimic glass surfaces. This design language is consistent across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch, offering a unified look and feel.
Dynamic elements like floating tab bars in Safari, a reworked Camera app interface, and animated spatial wallpapers reflect Apple’s intention to create a more immersive and fluid user experience.
Apple has also introduced a dynamic clock on the lock screen and simplified widgets that adapt in real time. These changes echo the company’s goal of blending aesthetics with functionality.
Apple Intelligence: On-Device AI Features
iOS 26 also introduces a suite of AI-powered tools under the banner of Apple Intelligence. Visual Intelligence enables users to interact with on-screen content, such as identifying objects in a photo or copying event details from a flyer without switching apps.
Another major feature is Live Translation, which allows real-time voice and text translation in apps like Messages, FaceTime, and Phone.
Apple is also adding Genmoji and Image Playground, creative tools that let users generate custom emojis and AI-generated chat wallpapers using simple prompts.
These features highlight Apple’s growing interest in generative AI while retaining its privacy-focused approach. Most AI functions run on-device or via secure processing on Apple servers.
Enhanced Core Apps and Ecosystem Integration
Core apps like Phone, Messages, and Maps have received notable upgrades. The Phone app now features Call Screening and Hold Assist, which allows the user to wait on hold. In Messages, Apple has added group typing indicators, emoji reactions, polls, and Apple Cash requests.
Apple Maps now includes features like airport navigation, visited place tracking, and smarter route suggestions.
The new Apple Games app consolidates Game Centre and Apple Arcade, offering a social hub for mobile gamers. Safari, Wallet, Photos, and Music also benefit from refined interfaces and functional upgrades.
Compatibility and Availability
iOS 26 is compatible with iPhone 11 and newer models, while AI features require the A17 Pro chip or later, which is found in iPhone 15 Pro and the upcoming iPhone 16 series.
A developer beta is already available, with a public beta expected in July and general rollout anticipated alongside the iPhone 17 launch in autumn 2025.
With iOS 26, Apple plans to balance innovation in AI with a strong emphasis on design consistency and user privacy. While some critics argue Apple is trailing rivals in AI capability, its focus remains on integrating intelligence features in a stable and secure ecosystem.
