GTA 6 Netflix Extended Look: Everything We Learned

GTA 6 Netflix Extended Look

Rockstar Games finally pulled back the curtain on Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) with an extended look broadcast on Netflix, and it answered a lot of questions fans have been asking since the leaks started circulating.

Two Characters, Not Four

Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson revealed that the studio actually considered giving GTA 6 four playable protagonists as a follow-up to GTA 5‘s three-character system. They scrapped the idea because it would have spread player attention too thin.

“We worried about diluting the amount of player time with each and therefore player connection with those characters,” Nelson told IGN.

Instead, Rockstar built the game around Jason and Lucia and their relationship, betting that players would connect more with two well-developed characters than four thinly-sketched ones.

How the Relationship System Works

Jason and Lucia’s romance isn’t just background story. It’s an actual gameplay system that runs separately from your criminal reputation.

According to Nelson, you keep the relationship alive by spending time together outside of missions. That means exploring the open world together, playing pool or mini-golf, kayaking, robbing stores, or robbing banks as a team.

Ignoring texts from your partner, even about mundane things like locking up the house, can hurt the relationship.

The story is structured so Jason and Lucia have to stick together for most of the plot regardless of what you do. However, Nelson said players who don’t want a romance plot at all should be able to opt out of the deeper relationship mechanics.

He was careful not to spoil how much the relationship status affects how the story plays out, only confirming that it does.

What We Got to See From the Netflix Extended Look

The nearly 30-minute Netflix preview opened with Jason and Lucia in a drug deal that goes wrong, triggering a shootout with an ability that looks similar to the Dead Eye targeting system from Red Dead Redemption 2.

From there the footage jumped between rooftop bar conversations, a security job protecting a character named Andres, and a bank robbery getaway for a character called Raul Bautista.

One mission showed the two characters split up on different floors of a building, each handling enemies differently. Jason took cover and shot it out with attackers while Lucia snuck around on foot, at one point needing to use her heels to take out one of the bad guys.

Rockstar confirmed you can switch between Jason and Lucia at any time during missions. You can also have one character tag along while you control the other, or play through sections solo.

Gameplay Systems

A few mechanics that leaked earlier got official confirmation:

  • Wanted system: The classic five-star system is gone. GTA 6 now goes up to six stars, and police can remember what you look like, so switching outfits can help you shake a pursuit.
  • Criminal profiling: A system tracks how you commit crimes, and pulling off efficient, clean jobs can earn you a reputation as a “good criminal.”
  • Car theft: Stealing cars now depends on the vehicle. Cheaper, older cars are easy targets, but pricier ones may require a mini-game or special equipment to break into.
  • Focus system: A new feature highlights points of interest in the world, whether that’s a collectible or the start of a new mission path.
  • Consequences: Your appearance can change based on your actions. Stay on the run from police for a few days and it’ll start to show.

The Open World

Rockstar wants players to actually spend time exploring rather than rushing from mission to mission, and says players will be rewarded for doing so.

The map is reportedly three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2‘s world, and Nelson told the New York Times that a February playthrough covering the main story plus some side content took about 80 hours.

Activities shown or confirmed include basketball, street and dirt bike racing, track races, car meets, base jumping, kayaking, scuba diving, fan boats, pool, mini-golf, and a zoo you can visit. Lucia was also shown at a gun range with a timer tracking her shooting speed.

Snapmatic, the series’ in-game social media platform, is back, though Rockstar says you won’t be able to post publicly with it since Jason and Lucia are trying to avoid leaving a digital trail while on the run.

Release Date

GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, starting at $79.99 for the Standard Edition. There’s no physical disc version. The full Extended Look is available on Rockstar’s YouTube channel for anyone who missed the Netflix premiere.
