Viber 4.1 for Android and iOS has a new feature through which users can make low cost calls to any mobile or landline phone. Viber Out will roll out globally after it was used to help users from the Philippines to contact friends and family in the aftermath of typhoon Haiyan. With the upgrade, users will be able to call anyone around the world at low rates using Viber Out credit which can be bought with an in-app purchase from Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

Viber has 200 million users spanning 193 countries and it has been around for 3 years now. The instant messaging app claims that only per minute rates count towards its price-per-call for Viber Out therefore undercutting the competition which charges significantly higher as shown by this table:

In an interview with the nextbigwhat, this is how Viber CEO Talmon Marco describes their growth strategy: “We rely on virality as well as marketing. We now have a marketing office in Philippines. And we are seeing the rewards of being there. We are going to be present in other markets.”
