Stephen Elop AMA

Stephen Elop AMAStill on the AMA (Ask Me Anything), Stephen Elop answered quite a number of questions and one of them naturally was about the Nokia smartphone branding changes after the acquisition. There has been quite a lot of speculation with regards to name change and many assuming that smartphones will have a complete rebrand with names like Microsoft Smartphone (X).

Today at the ask me anything session, Stephen did not directly say what the name changes will be or how soon they will be at, but directly confirmed the names change for Windows Phone. The details which you will read below included a mention that the current naming was quite a mouthful and that it was going to be different going onwards. Below was the question preceding his answer:

Question: Hi Stephen, Nice to see you being part of Microsoft again. When will we get the first Microsoft branded Smartphone? (round-about)

Stephen Elop: Thanks! I am very excited to be back at MSFT along with my Nokia colleagues. Now that we are One company, the marketing and product folks will lay in the plans for the shift to a consistent brand. While we are not ready to share precise details, i can assure you that it will not be the “Nokia Lumia 1020 with Windows Phone on the AT&T LTE Network” … too many words! That somehow doesn’t roll off the tongue…
