Huawei IFA press event invite 2014

Above is the invite sent to sections of the tech press that has kicked off another storm. The invite is simple and straight forward but just like we were able to sense something else in that HTC event invite, this one has some industry insiders pointing at the imminent release of the successor to the gigantic Ascend Mate 2, the Ascend Mate 3.

Though Huawei is yet to release the Ascend Mate 2 to more markets (it just hit carrier stands in the States the other day), its been a while since it was unveiled and time is nigh for a successor so this speculation is not misplaced at all. Still, the ‘Make it Possible” moniker could just imply a newer version of the Honor featuring Huawei’s benchmark-besting HiSilicon Kirin 920 chip. Though that would be unlikely as another Honor (the 6) just saw light of day a few days ago. Let us just hope Huawei will release more befitting teasers like it did prior to its main event at the Mobile Web Congress.

IFA in Berlin, Germany, is now one of the most anticipated events for mobile tech enthusiasts since besides the usual consumer electronics like televisions, dishwashers, microwaves, cookers and all that other stuff we normally don’t have much interest in, companies like Sony, Samsung, LG and Huawei throw in worthy surprises that have come to define the smartphone and tablet market. Like the Galaxy Note for instance. Started out as the first “insane” big display smartphone and earned the name ‘phablet’ only for everyone to follow years later (even Apple may be headed there). Samsung is still mum on what it has in store for us as far as the next Galaxy Note is concerned but make no mistake, with the Galaxy S5 turning out to be what it was, it will be huge and everyone ought to pay attention. Sony has already sent out invites to its IFA event so there’s more to look forward to when this new month nears its end and September starts. There were no hints on Sony’s invite but how about a successor to the huge Xperia Z Ultra? There are rumours about the Xperia Z2’s successor, the Z3, being showcased but though not entirely ruling that out I’ll take those with a pinch of salt.

Expected specifications of the Ascend Mate 3 are as follows:

  • Display: 6 inch full HD (1080p)
  • Processor: Octa-core HiSilicon Kirin 920 backed by an Adreno 305 GPU
  • Memory: 2 GB RAM
  • Camera: 13 MP main/ 5 MP FFC
  • Battery: 4050 mAh
