The bug was a result of a Facebook software update with Facebook’s image scrapping tool that detects pictures connected with links to content within posts. The tool allows users to present links to other content with a photo from the site they are linking to. The post, complete with picture, then appears friends’ timelines.
Facebook has since fixed the bug and released a statement to that effect where it attributed the bug to an error in the system that helps block bad links on Facebook incorrectly marked web addresses as malicious and inappropriate. As a result, some existing posts were hidden, while other posts were blocked completely. Publishers were particularly vocal about the bug and its effects on their businesses.
