Huawei seems to have hit the right chords with the global smartphone user base with its latest premium smartphones. The Huawei P9 and its larger sibling, the P9 Plus, have managed to sell 2.6 million units in the 6 weeks they have been available on the market.
The Huawei P9 was unveiled in early April with its dual-camera setup and its partnership with German lens maker Leica being its main standout features.
According to a statement from the company, the Huawei P9 and P9 Plus experienced strong sales in China, France, Finland and Britain. In France, for instance, P9 sales were up by a staggering 1,000% over last year’s flagship smartphone, the P8. In Poland and Finland, the P9 eclipsed sales of the P8 by 400% while it did the same in Britain by 300%. In China, Huawei’s home country, the P9 scored 5 million pre-orders in just a week. Globally, sales of the P9 are higher than those of the P8 by 130%.
Overall, Huawei shipped 28.3 million smartphone units in the first quarter of the year which represented a 64% increase over a similar period last year. This further cemented the Chinese company’s hold of the third slot among the top 5 smartphone vendors in the world with 8.5% market share.
