To meet its promises to customers and future subscribers, Telkom Kenya has been expanding its turf in the local telephony space. The operator, which saw a key transformation that was marked by a rebrand strategy from Orange to Telkom, has been on a journey to appeal to as many Kenyans as possible in a market that is still cannibalized by Safaricom.

At position three in terms of customer numbers, Telkom has used its position to push forward for additional coverage. Some of its activities and projects are under a multi-billion budget, including its network modernization and infrastructure expansion program that was launched three years ago. The carrier has since pumped KES 9 billion into the project, which was further supplemented by a KES 4.1 billion loan from the European Investment Bank back in 2018. Earlier this year, Telkom reported it has allocated an extra KES 1 billion for the expansion plan.

Today, Telkom has reported that it has completed the expansion of 3G and 4G networks in Nairobi, Nakuru, Eldoret, Mombasa and Kisumu. These areas are already served by the aforementioned technologies. However, modernization and upgrades imply that customers will get access to internet services at improved speeds than before.

As of this writing, Telkom says its 3G and 4G services are available in 30 towns and urban centres across the state. In addition, Telkom reports that these areas have since seen optimized coverage by way of doubling and improving existing outdoor and indoor coverage, as well as capacity.

“It remains our objective to entrench our position as Kenya’s preferred Data network, which can only be achieved through the evolution of our network to match the intended service quality expectations of a future fit telco,” says Telkom Kenya CEO Mugo Kibati.

“There may be pockets of network interruption during the execution of this specific upgrade but our customers and Kenyans should look forward to an even more superior experience once done,” he adds.
