A lot of things have been cancelled thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. The latest one is YouTube Rewind for 2020.
Since 2010, YouTube has always released a Rewind video, an annual recap of that year’s viral trends and major internet culture moments.
In a statement posted on Twitter, the company cited how the year had been different and that they’re taking a break from Rewind this year.
This announcement brought mixed feelings with some creators agreeing and others on the contrary.
Other users were disappointed too.
Rewind 2019 used a different approach and was a montage of original video segments instead of the usual mashup format.
Rewind 2018 was the most disliked video on YouTube.
It was so bad that even Susan Wojcicki’s kids told her that it was cringey.
“One record we definitely didn’t set out to break was the most-disliked video on the internet. Even at home, my kids told me our 2018 Rewind was ‘cringey’, ” the YouTube CEO wrote on a blog post.
MKBHD’s argument was that YouTube was trying to be more friendly to advertisers as well as trying to include as many creators as possible and combining these aspects made it a jumbled mess.
However, we expect that Rewind-themed video compilations will be made by other creators on the patform to hopefully fill this void such as this one from 2019.
