Safaricom launched the new M-PESA app today. This means it is officially out of beta, although the Play Store listing is yet to reflect that.

Nonetheless, the app, which has been under testing for nearly a year is a culmination of the operator’s journey to honing its financial services, and having used the app over that period, we can see why the product is a big deal for Safaricom, and we are going to see it grow with the inclusion of interesting features such as mini apps.

However, M-PESA services have also been facing delays for the better part of the afternoon and early evening today, with reports from a ton of users who confirmed that they could not transact.

Services such as sending money and bill payments have been the most affected.

This, we confirmed, after making a visit to a retail store where customers were stuck on long queues following the delays.

As of this writing, however, it seems that the services have stabilized.

Also, this is the first time that the product has undergone some issues, having managed to stay reliable for the better part of the year.

In mid-2020, M-PESA services were prone to issues, with frequent maintenance works that were usually conducted over the weekends.

Are you still experiencing delays?
