In the last couple of days, there were rumours that Facebook was planning to change its name.
The day has finally come and passed, and the company now is called Meta.
The development was made official by the company CEO and Board Chairman, Mark Zuckerberg.
However, there are a few things you should know.
The corporation’s social network is still caked Facebook.
Meta, is basically the company that owns the social media apps; Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and VR platform Oculus.
Furthermore, the new company will be run under two operating parts: Family of Apps, and Reality Labs.
The Family of Apps are known to all of us, and so is the Reality Labs, which basically entails Oculus and its associated services.
Earlier, we had guessed that the company would be named Metaverse. Nonetheless, that turned out false, but the ‘metaverse’ DNA was all over the Connect presentation.
Basically, Meta says that ‘metaverse’ essentially brings the company to life, helps people connect, find communities, and creates a platform for businesses to grow. And yes, that is confusing to us too.
Accessing the Meta site gives the same descriptions, which is ‘the metaverse will feel like a hybrid of today’s online social experiences, sometimes expanded into three dimensions or projected into the physical world. It will let you share immersive experiences with other people even when you can’t be together — and do things together you couldn’t do in the physical world. It’s the next evolution in a long line of social technologies.’
For the moment, metaverse is yet to launch fully for the masses.
Part of it is the Horizon Home, which is basically the earlier version for a home base in metaverse. It will be the first thing you experience once you start using the Quest headset.
Furthermore, users will soon be able to invite their friends to join Horizon Home. It is basically another social platform where friends can play games and watch videos.
Before the year ends, users will also be able to make Messenger calls using VR.
The metaverse in this case will cover all elements of work and play.
Finally, Quest for Business will also see the light of day; it will include business features, including the ability to collaborate with colleagues and so forth.
Before we conclude, it is worth noting that Facebook has been receiving a backlash from the masses over the manner it conducts its business. There have been cases where the corporation has been accused of focusing on profits and has not done enough to ensure that its products are not harmful to users.
The case in the point is Instagram. A whistleblower from the company said that Facebook knows its image-sharing platform is harmful especially to teenage girls and has not done enough to fix the concern.
On the whole, the rebrand makes sense because companies sometimes adjust their operations, including a new name, to thwart potential threats.
