Bloggers of Zambia and Bloggers Association of Kenya (BAKE) joins fellow Africans across the continent in commemorating Africa Freedom Day. The day serves as a yearly reminder of Africa’s collective struggle for liberation from external control. For BAKE and Bloggers of Zambia, African Liberation Day underscores the fundamental principles of freedom, equality, and justice that are crucial to achieving Africa’s collective goals for a better future.
“At the core of Africa Freedom Day is the recognition of the inherent dignity and rights of all Africans, including the right to freedom of expression, access to information, and privacy. In today’s digital age, these rights are more relevant and essential than ever before, as they shape our ability to participate fully in the digital sphere, exercise our democratic freedoms, and hold those in power accountable,” reads part of their joint statement.
Despite strides in digital rights across Africa, serious challenges persist. These challenges, like internet shutdowns and activist harassment, threaten the core principles of freedom and democracy. They silence critical voices and weaken the foundation of good governance.

African governments are urged to uphold digital rights enshrined in international agreements. This is critical for a strong democracy and development. This year’s call to action is:

- Digital Inclusion: Bridge the digital divide for all Africans.
- Transparent Governance: Ensure accountable regulation of online platforms and surveillance.
