Qualcomm and Google Extend Android Support to 8 Years

Qualcomm has announced a partnership with Google to extend software and security updates to up to eight consecutive years.

This initiative will initially apply to devices powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset and select Snapdragon 8 and 7 series platforms, starting with smartphones launching on Android 15.

This collaboration aims to address a longstanding concern among Android users: the relatively short duration of software support compared to other platforms.

By providing extended updates, Qualcomm and Google intend to enhance user experience, promote sustainability by reducing electronic waste, and align with global cybersecurity standards.

Key Points of the Initiative

  • Extended Support Duration: Devices equipped with Snapdragon 8 Elite and select Snapdragon 8 and 7 series chipsets will receive up to eight years of Android OS and security updates.
  • Kernel Upgrades: The program includes two upgrades to the Android Common Kernel (ACK) during the support period, facilitating OEMs in maintaining device security and performance over time.
  • OEM Participation: While Qualcomm and Google provide the framework for extended support, the implementation depends on individual device manufacturers. OEMs are encouraged to adopt this program to offer prolonged support to their customers.

Will All Android Phones Receive Support?

Not necessarily. While Qualcomm and Google are enabling this extended update cycle, the final decision is up to phone manufacturers (OEMs). Some brands might still limit updates to three to five years, so users should check a company’s official policy before purchasing a device.

For example, Samsung recently extended updates to seven years for its Galaxy S24 series, but other brands like Xiaomi, OnePlus, and Motorola have varying policies. This initiative reflects a broader industry trend toward extended device support.

However, it is important to note that the success of this program largely depends on OEMs’ willingness to participate. Users are advised to verify the support policies of specific brands and models to ensure they benefit from the extended updates.

The Qualcomm-Google partnership marks a significant step forward in enhancing the Android ecosystem’s sustainability and user satisfaction. By potentially extending device lifespans, this initiative offers consumers more value and contributes to environmental conservation efforts.
