Flighty App: A Flight Tracker With an Early Warning System

Airlines have a complicated relationship with honesty.

A delay is frequently announced in stages: first a small push, then another, then a gate change, and somewhere in that sequence a passenger who had been watching the board realizes they have been managing their disappointment in real time while the airline catches up to information it already had.

Flighty was built for that gap. It is a flight tracking app that tells frequent flyers what is actually happening with their flight before the departure board, the airline app, or the gate agent gets around to it.

Through this it has earned a fanatical following among frequent flyers, who treat the app less as a travel utility and more as a competitive advantage.

The reason it outpaces airline apps is rooted in how it sources its data: rather than waiting on what an airline chooses to publish, Flighty pulls from FAA feeds, ADS-B signals broadcast directly from aircraft, and historical performance data, cross-referencing all of it to flag delays before they become official.

For a flight tracking app, that breadth of devotion is unusual, and the product design goes a long way toward explaining why.

What It Tracks

Flighty’s main functionality covers live flight tracking, delay and cancellation alerts, and a detailed breakdown of each flight that goes well beyond departure time and gate number.

Aircraft type, inbound flight status, route history, baggage carousel, and departure performance data all sit inside a single flight view, giving a user the kind of context that usually requires three separate sources to piece together.

Flighty’s Package

Knowing that the inbound aircraft is running 40 minutes late from a previous sector is more useful than knowing a flight is currently “on time,” and Flighty surfaces that distinction early.

Calendar sync and TripIt integration let users import flights automatically instead of entering them manually. Two tools, Morning Of and Connection Assistance, help with common travel day concerns.

Morning Of provides a briefing to help users prepare for their journey, while Connection Assistance monitors tight layovers and warns when a connection is at risk.

Connection Assistance

The Pro Tier Pricing and What It Offers

The free version covers the core tracking well enough for occasional travel, but the paid Pro tier is where the app earns its reputation among frequent flyers.

It adds earlier delay insights, live activities that update directly on the iPhone lock screen, and deeper historical statistics about routes, aircraft, and airlines.

For someone flying several times a month, the additional lead time on delay information alone tends to justify the cost. For someone flying twice a year, the value proposition is less obvious.

Pro costs $4.99 a month billed annually at $59.99, though a weekly and lifetime option also exist alongside a Family plan for those who want to extend it across a household.

All Pro features are free for a first flight, which is a sensible way to let the product make its own case before asking for a commitment.

The full Pro feature set includes unlimited flight tracking with live updates, a complete history of past flights, and the ability to import flights from email, calendars, and TripIt.

It also offers more than 65 types of alerts for delays, gate changes, and schedule changes. For aviation enthusiasts, there is also detailed information on aircraft, routes, and flights.

What the Numbers Say

On the App Store, Flighty holds a rating of 4.8 from over 100,000 reviews, a figure that reflects sustained satisfaction rather than a single viral moment.

The app has also received Apple’s Editor’s Choice recognition and a design award, which for a travel utility app speaks to how much attention has been paid to the interface rather than just the data underneath it.

Apple’s Editor’s Choice

Flighty is not available on the Google’s Play Store, making it an iOS-exclusive product. Android users looking for a comparable alternative to Flighty will need to look elsewhere.

Who Is It For?

Flighty makes obvious sense for frequent business travelers and aviation enthusiasts who want the most granular, earliest possible view of what is happening with their flight.

For casual travelers who fly a handful of times a year and are content with airline apps and airport boards, the free features will do the job, and the Pro subscription will feel like more than they need.

This is the rough distinction the app offers: if a flight delay costs you more than inconvenience, whether in money, another booking, or a connection that cannot be rescheduled, Flighty pays for itself the first time it tells you something the airline hasn’t admitted yet.
