Production Republic recently launched “U Film It”, the first contest for mobile phone films in Kenya. The contest requires Kenyans to submit videos made from their mobile phones to the official Production Republic contest website. The films once submitted, stand a chance to win cash prizes with awards being given to weekly and grand draw winners. The top prize is Ksh. 50,000 with other prizes of Ksh. 20,000 and Ksh. 15,000 awarded to 2nd and 3rd placed participants respectively.
Entries are invited from any area of interest and theme. The limit is your creativity and time- 3 minutes. The film must be recorded using a mobile phone but can be edited with a computer for further improvements.
To participate in this contest, simply take your mobile phone and film events around you in the most creative way you can. After that, you can edit the video with your phone or transfer to a computer using Bluetooth, data cable or memory card. The last step requires you to register and upload video from your account. On the other hand, if the film is more than 10 MB, then upload via email by sending to [email protected].
To recap, these are the steps to enter.
1. Shoot film using your mobile phone
2. Edit using phone or computer and review to ensure that it is not longer than 3 minutes
3. Go to, www.productionrepublic.co.ke and register. Check your email for account verification details
4. Login into your account and add video
5. Verify video details such as synopsis, phone make and model and upload.
Once uploaded, the film will be assessed for compliance with “U Film It” terms and conditions and then published on our website. Once the films are accepted, public voting will determine one weekly finalist at the end of every week for the next 4 weeks. The weekly finalists will then face a judging panel and the top 3 films will win the grand cash prizes.

We hope to discover and nurture young film makers through this contest. Mobile phones are much more prevalent in Kenya than camcorders and television sets. Therefore, we hope to reach many more people using devices that are freely available.
