Not so long ago the conversation hit the interwebs about the Galaxy Mega series. Many said this is what was to become of the Note, many judging by the size. Naturally, Samsung has associated their phablet line-up with Note and many bloggers and journalists assumed that this is a rebranding process. well, clearly in this announcement there misses one integral element in the Note series, the stylus, that Samsung lovingly calls S Pen.
Without ruining the Galaxy Note III party, Samsung decided to fill the gap of people who still want something bigger, but not just big enough into the 7 inch foray. And the Mega range was born, twins.
Let me draw a comparison table based on the features and specifications that Samsung has made available so far.

First of all you will be interested to note that both of them have Dual-Core processors, compared to the Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S III, same goes to a smaller power battery compared to screen size. But Samsung has not revealed the screen resolution, but they have an LCD screen, QHD for the 5.8 and HD for the 6.3. The Mega 6.3 is built for speed as it’s an LTE version while the Mega 5.8 is a HSPA version.
Most of the other features are the same save for the dimensions, weight and the fact that Mega 5.8 has no 16GB storage option and a lesser battery. Also at unveil, Samsung has only showed the two in different colours, the Mega 5.7 with a Frosty White and Mega 6.3 with Misty Black, naturally one would assume that they will be in both colours. Let’s see what else Samsung reveals in the near future. Availability starts with Europe and Russia in May and the rest of the world gradually.
What do you think of the Galaxy Mega?
[…] Galaxy Mega was announced yesterday, in two versions, the 5.8 inch and the 6.3 inch ones. And they were bound to cause ripples. And […]
Looking at the spec sheet you realize that this Galaxy Mega range is meant to house scaled down Galaxy Note models. Think of them as mid-range phablets. The specs are not over the edge as far as Samsung’s always over the top specs go (LCD screen, not the fancied AMOLEDs, a dual-core chip when the conversation is centred around octa-core and quad-core). Also there are variants that will have 8 GB internal storage. That means the pricing will be a bit lower. There is a market for that. While we’ll obviously joke about the many devices Sammy keeps churning, there’s some gap that the Mega series will fill. And contrary to what many believe, this does not take anything away from the Note series which retains its high end tag.
Samsung has predicted that they will sell some 1 million Galaxy Mega devices a month. Can they make that prediction blindly? They do that often for other devices and rarely miss their prediction. Looks like there is a market and a huge one at that.

after seeing the phone i thought it was going to spoil the show for the just released galaxy S4, but the fact that it does not have radio is totally a no-no for many people. as much as they are targeting mid-range customers, they would have included that radio feature.
and i hear the price is something around $220 for the 5.8.
