The other day, we mentioned that Tecno flagship phone, the Phantom 8, had arrived at PhonePlaceKenya for KES 32,000. That price remains a bargain, even if you buy the device weeks from today.
It appears that the device has made a second local appearance in popular ecommerce site, Jumia. The folks there have put a KES 36,999 pricetag on it, and while that is 5K more than what PhonePaceKenya charges, there are a couple of goodies to compliment your purchase. To begin with, buyers will receive a free Tecno Gift Pack that consists of a selfie stick, notebook and a water bottle. Also, a Telkom Kenya 4G sim card is bundled with this deal, in addition to 2.5 GB of data. There is a year of warranty in tow as well.
Still, this pricing is KES 4,000 shy of what Tecno is asking for the device in oversees markets. During its official global unveiling in Dubai, its price was said to be an equivalent of KES 40,000. Of course there are several factors that determine cost in different markets, and Jumia’s pricing is a pointer to what the Phantom 8 might cost on other retail stores once it is announced in Kenya officially. That announcement is said to take place in November 15.
We have already covered the specs of the device here, but as a reminder, this is a fully-fledged device with good specs that skips on a couple of lifestyle additions. One of them is water and resistance, but that is understandable considering its target market. Also, the Phantom 8 does not come with a modern 18:9 display, which is a minor setback considering rival devices from big boys have adopted the trend already. Lastly, there is no Android 8.0.0 Oreo here, which is a shame considering 7.0 is not even the newest flavour of Nougat. On the bright side of things, Tecno updates some of its lineups, but that process takes months to materialize, so a 2018 update to Oreo is not a farfetched idea.
