HMD Announces the Budget Nokia 2.2 Smartphone With “AI Face Unlock”

HMD today has released the Nokia 2.2 which is their latest budget friendly phone which slots on the lower end of their lineup.

The Nokia 2.2 sports a 5.7 inch HD+ screen with a waterdrop notch which is not uncommon in this price range. It has the MediaTek Helio S22 chip with either 2 or 3GB of DDR4 RAM and runs on Android 9 Pie. You can either get it with 16GB or 32GB flavours and you can expand this storage using a MicroSD card slot upto 400GB.

In terms of cameras, you get a 13MP main camera with an f2.2 aperture lens while the front facing camera is a 5MP one.

HMD touts that the cameras have ‘AI powered low light imaging’ where it takes multiple images and through algorithms, it can create a single image with more light, greater detail and less noise.

The front camera also enables face unlock where HMD touts its AI driven face unlock. It uses “deep learning algorithms and liveliness detection for an accurate and spoof-proof experience.”

A surprise announcement of this phone is in the accessories department. Nokia brought back the Xpress on covers, which are colourful covers that you can exchange to go with your personal style. You can buy these covers in either Pink Sand, Ice Blue or Forest Green Colours.

Since this is an Android One device, you are guaranteed 2 years of updates and 3 years of security updates, which is surprisingly rare in the Android world.

The Nokia 2.2 will be priced at an average of €99 an will be available in two colours: Steel and Tungsten Black.
