Yesterday, Huawei launched the Y9 Prime 2019, which is their latest mid-range smartphone for the Kenyan market.
We had the opportunity to do an unboxing and have a first impression of the Y9 Prime 2019. Martin Githinji will lead you through this experience in the latest TeKITnGo series.
It is a premium version of the Huawei Y9 2019 that was announced last year and it has some key upgrades.
It retains a similar 2340 x 1080p LCD display but there are some key changes. The 6.59 inch display has very tiny bezels and has an insane 91% screen to frame ratio which makes it feel quite slick. This was made possible thanks to the new pop up camera that the phone now possesses.
The Y9 Prime 2019 is powered by Huawei’s own Kirin 710F CPU which is a powerful CPU that also powers the Y9 2019 and the Huawei P30 Lite. The phone comes with 4GB of RAM as standard and you get either 64GB or 128GB of internal storage as standard.
You get a total of 4 cameras on the Y9 Prime 2019. The selfie camera is a single 16MP unit that is motorized and pops up when you switch to selfie mode. The motorized system has been tested and can apparently sustain over 100,000 repeated ‘pop ups’.
There is a total of 3 cameras at the back which includes a wide angle camera, which is great at this price point. There is a primary 16MP camera with an f/1.8 aperture and has fast autofocus. There is an 8MP ultrawide camera and a 2MP depth sensor.
It runs on EMUI 9.0 which is the latest Huawei skin on top of Android 9 Pie. The battery is a 4000mAh unit which means it will have great battery life. The Y9 Prime also features a USB Type C port which will delight some people who look for that feature in a phone.
The phone comes in several colours: Midnight Black, Emerald Green and Sapphire Blue. The back has a cool dual tone finish which makes it really cool and makes it stand out from the crowd.
You can pick this phone from Jumia for Kshs 24,999 during their Anniversary sale which is down from the original Kshs 28,999 pricetag.
