After two weeks of anticipation and teasing during the pre-order period, Huawei has finally made available its new budget entrant: the Huawei Y6s. Budget phones have been becoming good in recent years and Huawei knows this evidenced by the previous launches of youth focussed and entry-level devices to this market segment.
The Huawei Y6s is the first device in the Y series to be launched this year and will join its other Y series phones as it targets price-conscious consumers
Here’s everything you need to know about the Huawei Y6s
The Huawei Y6s comes with a 6.09″ inch LCD Dewdrop display at a resolution of 720 by 1560 pixels.
It runs on Android 9 Pie and EMUI 9.1. For all those worried about Google apps, the device comes with them preinstalled including the Google Play Store, Google Drive, Sheets, Docs, Duo, Google App, Google Photos, Google Sheets and Google Slides.
Huawei’s App Gallery is also available in case you want to venture out and see what apps are available on the Huawei’s platform as it readies for life without Google’s apps and services. They are already working to bring popular Facebook apps to their alternate app store.
Under the hood is a MediaTek Helio P35 chip which is an upgrade over the Helio A22 chip found in the predecessor, the Huawei Y6(2019).
Huawei also upgraded the RAM and storage configuration from 2GB of RAM to 3GB of RAM and from 32GB of onboard storage to 64GG of onboard storage. There’s also a PowerVR GE8320 GPU. You can expand storage using an external MicroSD card up to 512GB.
The Huawei Y6s back finish comes in 2 beautiful shades – a glossy top half and matte bottom half. They’ll be two versions: Orchid Blue and Starry Black.
Photography is handled by an 8MP selfie camera housed in the waterdrop notch that interrupts the display coupled with a 13MP main rear camera.
For biometrics, you get face unlock and a rear fingerprint scanner.
A 3020mAh battery will power up the device. It also features a MicroUSB charging port.
What they are saying
“The introduction of the Huawei Y6s in the market is part of our strategy to target users who are looking for a budget device that offers unique experience that meets their needs and requirement. As we aim at positioning ourselves as the world’s number leader in the device category we are keen at ensuring that we provide devices that meet the needs of these consumers,” Huawei Mobile Kenya Country Head, Jim Zhujie said.
“We are also seeking partnerships with lenders and partners who resonate with our brand ethos so that we ensure every Kenyan can afford a Huawei Device without any challenges. We are also planning to strategize our brand positioning in the market so as reach consumers at their doorsteps,” he added.
