Safaricom Fills Joe Ogutu’s Spot With Citibank Executive

The other day, we learned that Safaricom’s Chief of Special Projects and Acting Chief Business Development & Strategy Officer Joe Ogutu had retired.

He departs from the carrier after serving it for 17 years.

At the same time, the telco announced that it had appointed Stephen Kiptinness as Chief Corporate Affairs Officer.

The role was initially held by Steve Chege, who moved to Vodacom Group Chief External Affairs Officer.

Chege worked for the telco for more than one decade.

Stephen’s role is now effective, after starting his tenure on 1st May 2022, subject to relevant regulatory approval.

Now, back to Joe Ogutu’s retirement, the telco has filled his spot.

The new EXCO member is Michael Mutiga, who will serve as Chief Business Development & Strategy Officer. His tenure has since started.

He will lead Safaricom’s business development and transformation agenda and will be responsible for Strategic Partnerships, Mergers and Acquisitions, Safaricom’s funding strategy, and asset optimization.

With over 20 years of experience in Banking, Michael joins Safaricom from Citibank where he was a Managing Director and Head of Corporate Finance for Sub-Saharan Africa from 2019.

Michael was with Citibank for 15 years and has held various senior local and regional management and leadership roles.

Prior to joining Citibank, Michael worked in Barclays/Absa Capital, where he grew from a Management Associate to the Regional Coverage Head – East Africa, Investment Banking Division Africa, a role he held until he joined Citibank in 2006.

He holds a Bachelor of Law Degree from the University of Nairobi and a Master’s in Law degree from Temple University.

He is an Advocate and a Certified Public Secretary.
